RFID: the next big thing for mobile phones

RFID is the next big thing in applications for mobile phones.

For those out there that are not familiar with the term RFID: it stands for Radio Frequency IDentification. It is a small chip that can be programmed to store a small amount of data (i.e. a unique code or phone number) on it that can be read by a RFID enabled device. No cables attached, just touch the RFID chip (or tag as they are called) with your device (i.e. your mobile phone) and the device starts the accompanying application.

RFID is widely used in logistics to track and trace parcels. Or in public transport for payment (even in the Netherlands).

RFID will become widely available to the public as I expect that this year a lot of mobile phones yet to come will have a RFID reader built in. I guess that the next iPhone (expected June this year) will make the final break through for RFID technology.

In the mean time you can built your own hardware. Watch the video and see how it is done with an iPhone!

These are also the chips found in the brilliant, yet under-hyped Poken devices. Little usb-sticks which, when you touch two, share a bit of information - and next time you connect it to your computer you can easily add that person to your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or whatever profiles that person has in his Poken-profile.
